Green Weddings

By Keisha Jennette

One of the latest trends in weddings sweeping the country is “green weddings.” No, I’m not talking green taffeta bridesmaid dresses (although green is making a comeback); I’m talking about ecologically and socially sophisticated weddings. Whether you are an extreme environmentalist or simply wish to support, here’s how you can contribute to the cause.

Going to Chapel and We’re Going to Recycle.

So what exactly is a “green wedding”? According to Green Elegance Weddings website (www.greeneleganceweddings.com) a “green wedding” is a celebration that incorporated ecologically and socially responsible products and services into all aspects of the planning festivities. Now before you panic, you should know that there have been great strives in the products and services offered to individuals, or in your case, couples who want to make environmentally and socially conscience decisions while enjoying their dream wedding day. This new concept isn’t about going to extremes, but rather about making better choices.

It’s Easy Being Green

In order to coordinate an eco-savvy wedding, you have to plan. Just as you would plan for a traditional wedding, you should first envision what your dream wedding entails. Then decide what elements of your wedding are most important to you as a couple. Now, it’s time to get to work. To make sure your plans follow the “green wedding” theme, you should apply three basic principles: reduce reuse and recycle.

Reduce

According to Emily Elizabeth Anderson’s book, Eco-Chic Weddings, you can find ways to reduce your eco-footprint by adding some common-sense practicality to your wedding planning. The author suggests that one way to “reduce” is to simplify. Include in your wedding only items that are most important to you and forget about the rest. By prioritizing, you can get the wedding you really want without being wasteful. There is no rule to say that you have to give your wedding guest favors. Instead, make a contribution to your favorite charity on behalf of guests.

Reuse

The principle of “reuse” may be the hardest to convince nonbelievers that an eco-chic wedding is attainable. From a practical and economical stance, reusing could not only be gentler on the environment, but on your budget too.  Consider purchasing a gently used gown or reconstructing your mother’s wedding dress to fit your personal style. You can also do you part by choosing items that can serve more than one purpose. For example, instead of selecting jewelry that will only be used for the wedding, purchase classic and timeless pieces that can be worn well past your wedding day.

Recycle

Support vendors and suppliers who display good environmental habits. As a consumer you have the power to have your voice heard by where and how you chose to spend your money. The easiest way to “recycle” is to look for the label. Many of these items have been made using post-consumer materials that are better for the environment. Also look for vendors and suppliers that conduct business in a way that is socially honorable. Be sure to buy diamonds only from reputable jewelers who do not sell “conflict diamonds” (a diamond mined in a war zone). Your patronage will help these businesses continue to do the right thing.
